Cottontown is a historic neighborhood in downtown Columbia, SC located North of Elmwood Avenue, and between Anthony Street, Sumter Street, and Bull Street. This is one of the earliest planned suburban neighborhoods in Columbia. Cottontown is named after the cotton storage warehouses that used to operate there in the past.
Most of the homes in this charming neighborhood were originally built between 1925 and 1940, mainly in the Craftsmen bungalow style; however there are also some tutor revival and colonial revival style homes as well. Many of these beautiful homes have been renovated, but with great care to ensure the homes retain their historical appearance and integrity. The canopy of old hardwoods over the sidewalks makes this area very picturesque. The residents in Cottontown are a mix of young and old, couples and singles, professionals, and families.
Cottontown has a very active neighborhood association. The association acts as a lobbying group to fight for beautification and historical preservation for their neighborhood. In 1997, the association was able to get the older Bellevue Historic District portion listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, they help organize events such as neighborhood parades and cookouts to promote a sense of community.
This neighborhood is not only appealing because of its attractive character, but also because of its great location in downtown Columbia. Earlewood Park, with large shade trees, rolling hills, and open grass, is within walking distance to the neighborhood. This park is one of the oldest and largest parks in the entire city and includes a community center, an amphitheater, a walking track, an 18 whole disc golf course, tennis courts, and two basketball courts. For additional outdoor recreation, residents can go to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden or the River walk parks. The Congaree National Park is just minutes away and is a beautiful place for canoeing, bird watching, camping, hiking and more.
As for entertainment, the recently revitalized Congaree Vista and Five Points Districts are great options. Both areas are known for their wide variety of restaurants and bars, as well as unique boutiques, specialty shops, and art galleries. Columbia is also home to the Koger Center and Colonial Life Arena which host numerous concerts and performances throughout the year, including Broadway Shows, the Ringling Brothers Circus, USC Sporting Events, and more!
